Calories vs. Clean Eating. How to Lose Weight on the Twinkie Diet with Professor Mark Haub, PhD

Do you want to lose weight while eating junk food? Could you drop fat on Twinkies, Nutty Bars, Slim Jims, and Tasty Cakes?

You’re probably thinking, “no freaking way!”

I say, “think again!”

I met a guy who lost 27 pounds in 10 weeks while eating mostly convenience-store foods. You might remember him from the CNN headline:

“Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds.”

Not only did he lose 27 pounds, but his blood work revealed a significant drop in triglycerides and HDL cholesterol.

How did Mark lose weight and improve his blood work while eating junk food?

Welp. If you’ve been paying attention to me (or to any personal trainer worth his title), you know that Calories are king.

Meaning – if you want to lose fat, then you’ll have to eat fewer Calories than you burn. There’s no way around it. I wish there was. But we cannot break the laws of thermodynamics (yet).

If you still don’t understand what the heck a Calorie is or how many of them you should be eating, please watch the video below before continuing with this article

4 big fat truths:

(1) Calories are a unit of measurement for energy.

(2) Body fat is stored-energy, due to a surplus of Calories eaten.

(3) Energy is neither created nor destroyed. You cannot gain fat without eating a surplus of Calories.

(4) If you want to lose fat, then you must spend more energy than you store – you must eat fewer Calories than you burn.

But here comes the conundrum of the century…

Is it more important to eat the right types of food OR to eat the right number of Calories?

You already know that you must be in a Calorie deficit to lose weight. But if all of those Calories come from sweets and salty snacks, will you still lose weight? And will you lose your health along the way?

It’s confusing questions like this, that made me reach out to that Mark dude from the CNN article.

I asked him how he did it. I asked him if Calories mattered more than food choices. And I asked him to be on my podcast.

He said yes.

(Yeah. I’ve been getting pretty lucky with these guests lately.)
